  • A two-year master's degree in Civil/Agricultural and allied Engineering disciplines with specialisation in Hydrology/Hydraulics/Water Resources/Irrigation Water Management/Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, or Equivalent.

GATE or IIT Madras Selection Process

In addition to the degrees, a candidate must meet one of these conditions:

  • (a) Candidates should have passed GATE, OR
  • (b) the candidate should clear the National Level selection processes to be conducted by IIT Madras specific to this announcement.

Desirable

Candidates with expertise in GIS (QGIS, ArcGIS), Field Hydrology, measurements and hydrologic modelling (Mike+, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM) would be given preference.

Nationality

Candidates must be citizens of India. Persons who have migrated from Pakistan with the intention of settling permanently in India, and subjects of Nepal, are also eligible. For them, a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India will be necessary for appointment. Such candidates should apply to the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs for this certificate and furnish satisfactory proof of having applied.

Other Eligibility Rules

  • The crucial date for deciding whether a candidate meets the eligibility criteria in every respect is the closing date for online applications (09.11.2026).
  • The prescribed qualifications are minimum requirements. Having them, or a higher qualification, does not by itself entitle a candidate to be called for interview.
  • Only relevant experience gained after the minimum qualifying degree will be taken into consideration.
  • Minimum requirements of qualifications and/or experience can be relaxed for exceptionally outstanding candidates.
  • For Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates, the experience required is relaxable at the Institute's discretion. This applies if, at any stage of selection, the competent authority finds that not enough candidates from these communities with the requisite experience are likely to be available for the vacancy reserved for them.
  • Women candidates are encouraged to apply. The Institute states that it strives for a workforce that reflects gender balance.

Candidates should check the official notification for the exact discipline-specific eligibility for the Junior Research Fellow (JRF) post.

How to Apply for IIT Madras Junior Research Fellow (JRF)
  1. Go to the IC&SR careers page at icandsr.iitm.ac.in/careers/current_openings.php. Applications are accepted online only through this website.
  2. Register on the portal. Use a correct and active email address, because the Institute will send all correspondence by email only.
  3. Find advertisement number Advt. 220/2026 on the page and submit the application for the relevant position.
  4. The system accepts only one application per registered login ID (email) for each advertisement. If you want to apply for more than one position, select all of them before you submit. A separate application has to be filled for each post.
  5. Submit the application by 9 November 2026. Once submitted, the application cannot be edited or reverted. Do not apply twice for the same post, because multiple applications from one candidate may lead to rejection.
  6. After you submit online, obtain a printout of the application form. You must hand it in when called for the test, and it will be needed at document verification, the test or the interview. Do not send a hard copy of the application to the Institute.

Candidates may send testimonials from people who know their work and character well. A candidate who is currently employed should submit testimonials from the most recent employer or immediate superior as a referee.

Only technical issues are accepted on these contacts, and no interim correspondence about the selection process will be considered.

Selection and Interview
  • Candidates will be shortlisted for the test/interview based on the information they give in their online applications.
  • The Institute may limit the number of candidates called for a written test, skill test or interview to a reasonable number. It can do this based on qualifications, a level and relevance of experience higher than the minimum prescribed, and other academic achievements.
  • The Institute has the right to decide how applicants are screened and tested for shortlisting and selection.
  • Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
  • Being called for a test or interview does not mean a candidate will be recommended or selected. Admission to any stage is provisional until eligibility is confirmed. A registration certificate or call letter does not mean the candidate has been found eligible.
  • Applicants already working on any project at IIT Madras must apply through proper channel. Otherwise, they must produce a No-Objection Certificate at document verification, the test or the interview. Candidates without an NOC will not be allowed to appear for the test or interview.
